Unfortunately, many ELV designers continue to base their designs on traditional systems that run on trademark networks for various building management systems and separate telephony, data, and television networks with their own or multiple cabling systems.

Most traditional ELV systems need to be more robust in expanding across large compounds. For example, kilometers or miles of cables must be physically laid to extend a traditional analog telephony, CCTV, or public alert system across a medium-sized compound. This necessitates using costly, multi-core copper cables that are both costly and difficult to lay. While on new IP-based solutions, the network cloud can seamlessly interconnect remote areas at a fraction of the cost of traditional solutions, consisting of all types of connection mediums such as much less expensive fiber cables or even microwave links.
